Dr. Anne Davies will be in our division for the morning working with teachers in the assessment cohort.
Title: Summative Assessment in Secondary Schools: A Measured Conversation Audience: Secondary School Educators Presenter/Facilitator: Anne Davies When it comes to summative assessment, dialogue can become emotional and even divisive. I am often reminded of Sir Michael Barber’s statement that as educators, we often find ourselves “on the road…paved with false dichotomies”. That is, educators discuss issues from the mindset of ‘either all or nothing.’ Yet, in the midst of these often-heated debates, there is a place for a measured, reasonable response. This session will focus on the emerging, contentious issues related to summative assessment and how we, along with our colleagues, can frame thoughtful responses and right actions that are in alignment. After all, we want students to be engaged. We want students to be learning. We want students to be successful. We also want teachers to use their informed professional judgment regarding achievement. |
